modern obscure music welcomes sam haar to the imprint for the first album released by an artist other than label founder pedro vian. the album is entitled euso. sam haar is a new jersey born producer and sound artist. influenced by both experimentalism and traditional dance music, haar�s music is something uniquely his own. he is best known as being one half of musical hardware loving duo blondes with zach steinman (neither of them are actually blonde). they famously favour machines over computers and provide hypnotic live shows. blondes have released the majority of their discography for rvng intl., before jumping to r&s in 2017 for the more danceable warmth album.

!!! 2018 repress !!! of nu guinea�s outstanding �world� ep � the neapolitan duo is set to release new material on tartelet later in the year as part of the labels 10 th anniversary. the beautifully dislocated bougainvilles live lays out some warm analogue textures across a live percussion base, while the vocal edit of title track nu world ploughs a similar furrow to obscure 80�s afro-disco, with rich musical synth work over a pacey afro groove and undeniable jazz-funk flair. the flute mix passes over the vocal refrain from mix one and just gets down and wigs-out on those solos - an absolute killer! exotica dance club sounds like herbie visited the salsoul studios with his banks of analogue gear and jammed out into the small hours, as we head home on the beatless outro, all synth washes and lavish ear candy.

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto�s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.�s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the �70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i�d be asked �what�s that track?� by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

from northern italy, the maestro beppe loda is continuing his beppe loda cuts series with his newest edit release. obscure disco rock explores rare tracks that blur the line between disco and rock from 70 s and 80 s italy.

the �matière obscure ep� is the first in a two-part series, whereby each composition was made using only recordings from one specific material (metal, glass and wood). the process involved taking everyday objects and making them resonate in every way possible, such as striking them with mallets or using a violin bow, and building up a sample library. �weld (metal_01)� kicks off the release with its syncopated percussion and gritty groove before moving into the cavernous �molten (glass_01)� that�s composed of rolling drums and sinister atmospherics. �carve (wood_01)� is a lot bouncier by comparison, with its fidgeting bassline and murky tones until the menacing �cast (glass_02)� concludes the package with machine inspired effects and a cacophony of stabs.

beginning in the early 90s, emmanuel top became france s first techno superstar, even if his popularity was greater in countries like germany and england than his own. he released a multitude of 12inches on the attack label la pipe a eau, krankenhaus, ecsta-deal, stress, turkish bazar, and many more many of which are compiled on the triple-disc release collection from 1995. top s next step took him to nova mute alongside heavyweights like plastikman. in addition to his solo work, top also collaborated with bruno sanchioni and bruno quartier in the mid to late 90s as the trance act b.b.e. (seven days and one week) and also as age of love (the original age of love).
